According
to Louise Derman- Sparks from the multimedia segment “Diversity and equity work: Lessons learned”, "the passion comes from the vision" (Laureate, 2011). My hope is that educators will use this
passion needed to help bring about change with issues related to diversity when
dealing with children and families from diverse backgrounds. Having a vision for change I hope will one
day provide an opportunity where everyone experiences equality and joy for
being themselves.
My
goal for the early childhood field is that information and trainings will be
made available related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice in
order to implement change in this area. As
a trainer at my early childhood facility, I can assist in providing training to
encourage understanding on beliefs, biases, personal experiences or educating
in areas of the unknown.
Thank
you to my colleagues in this diversity class for sharing insight in this area. I hope that you have a great summer and I
wish you all good luck in the completion of your degree.

Daphine,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I do hope that more trainings become available related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice. I did not know much of this until I took this class. I feel that these topics are very important and something I should have been aware of working in this field. I appreciate that we were able to take a class such as this because I have gained so many insights around the issues that I can relay to my staff. I'm sure they aren't aware of the different issues in this field and I feel as if I am responsible for making them aware so they can become better advocates for the children and families in their programs. I appreciate all of your feedback throughout this class and your insightful posts and discussions. I wish you the best of luck in your future courses and if you ever need anything, just let me know.
Thanks!

ReplyDeleteof new training programs that had emerged to address racial and ethnic prejudice, oppression and
diversity, Project Change commissioned this Guide to build upon and update the 1992 publication. This is a great read and I am sure you will find the information insightful and helpful as you pursue change. http://www.aspeninstitute.org/sites/default/files/content/docs/rcc/training.pdf
Daphine,
ReplyDeleteWhere would you start with the trainings? What would you decide was the most important types of -isms to cover? We learned a lot over the 8 weeks and I am curious to where you would start and how you would engage others to help spread the word around. There is a large deficit of learning about diversity. The only class that I have taken through the STARS system was multiculturalism. This did not touch on the other topics that we discussed, which I feel is a shame. Good luck with your work!
